A war veteran was describing his platoon. He claimed their magic number was 15. Whenever the Army reinforced them, after the very next scrape they were once again reduced to 15. After that casualties stopped. Always, same cycle, even when a single man was sent to them.

Taking note of this reflection we set out to find our ”magic” number. Everything pointed to 12. Beyond this number of participants within a performance unit: inefficiencies, down time, incidents of error, and so on increase. We cut that number down. BRAVO magic number is 6 (“Crew”)– three teams of 2 men.

The crew, in fact the entire company, is comprised of only two roles, Leaders and Twos (second-in-command). Everyone has both roles memorized. A short version of each role is: one is about “Performance” and the other is about “Stuff needed”.

Bravo on being predictable

Each BRAVO Team is about task ownership and about close and continuous supervision. A Crew is part of a larger organization. There are three Crews in a Branch, an autonomous profit centre. The Branch Leader is the Estimator and keeps the crews fully abreast of his plan at all times. The branch Second's mandate is to keep the three crews fully supplied. There are no generalities.
